Landscape Budget Breakdown

At HDS, our mission is to deliver exquisite landscapes, and we always strive to do so within our clients’ budget. In order to do this, we provide detailed proposals alongside our designs to breakdown the costs of various landscape components. To further demystify the landscape design + build process, we’ve outlined the various levels of landscape installations below to give our clients an idea of some reasonable budget ranges they want to allocate for their outdoor renovation. Every landscape is different, and site conditions can vary, so this guide is supposed to offer some general parameters, but is highly customizable to each project.

Sample Client Project - before HDS Transformation

This rendering represents a standard Chicago backyard, with a small landing and staircase down to a concrete walkway and lawn between the house and garage. Although in square footage this space may be relatively small, it has a lot of potential, and can accommodate a range of different landscape upgrades, depending on your budget.

*Please note that none of the budgets below include furniture. Furniture is shown to represent the scale of what could fit in these spaces, and during the design process we can work with clients’ existing furniture or suggest new furniture pieces to make sure the space lives up to its full potential.

$15,000 - $25,000 Backyard Transformation

For a budget of $15,000-25,000, a paver patio and plantings could be added to the yard to not only give it character, but add important dedicated space for dining, lounging, and/or grilling. Plants bring color and texture to the yard, add more seasonal interest, and can also offer privacy in the form of tall screening trees or shrubs.

Key Elements Within Budget Range:

  • Paver Patio

  • Plantings

$35,000 - $55,000 Backyard Transformation

For a budget of $35,000-55,000, we can add to the use of backyard space by incorporating a new composite deck off of the house. This creates another zone in the landscape, so that dining and lounging areas can both be a bit larger and more spread out. Composite decks are a great low-maintenance addition to Chicago backyards.

Key Elements Within Budget Range:

  • Paver Patio

  • Plantings

  • New Composite Deck with Aluminum Railings

$60,000 - $75,000 Backyard Transformation

For a budget of $60,000-75,000, one might wish to incorporate a large paver patio space, with a more premium paver option. This really maximizes use of backyard space, especially with the addition of a powder-coated aluminum fire pit connected directly to a gas line for ease of use. Backyard entertainment options really open up with this budget, as more seating can be incorporated. Additionally, decorative composite screening is added under the deck, to provide a more polished look and create some separation from what might be a storage space, or somewhere you want to keep four-legged friends from meandering. To expand use into the evening hours, this design also includes a simple low-voltage LED lighting system to create ambience.

Key Elements Within Budget Range:

  • Premium Paver Patio

  • Plantings

  • New Composite Deck with Aluminum Railings

  • Aluminum Gas-Powered Fire Pit

  • Under-Deck Screening

  • Simple Low-Voltage LED Lighting System

$75,000 - $100,000+ Backyard Transformation

For a budget of $75,000 to $100,000+, comfort, usability, and aesthetics of your yard are bolstered by the addition of a motorized powder-coated aluminum shade structure, a more advanced LED lighting system with zoning/dimming options, and an irrigation system. These amenities can truly make your backyard space the oasis of your dreams, that you can enjoy during the daytime or nighttime, rain or shine, quiet morning coffee or party - all the better that you don’t have to remember to water your new plants!

Key Elements Within Budget Range:

  • Premium Paver Patio

  • Plantings

  • New Composite Deck with Aluminum Railings

  • Aluminum Gas-Powered Fire Pit

  • Under-Deck Screening

  • Motorized Aluminum Shade Structure

HDS Backyard Transformation

In a quintessential Chicago backyard, we were asked to create a landscape solution for our clients to enjoy as a family of three. With entertaining and outdoor enjoyment at the top of the list, multiple areas were designed for gatherings of all types. Our design incorporated low-maintenance materials including composite decking, aluminum railings and light fixtures, wear-resistant pavers, and hearty plantings to create a low-maintenance retreat for many years to come. A custom, gas-burning fire pit was also installed to lengthen the outdoor season.
